Overview
Inventory Groups lives under Automation Platform in the dashboard sidebar. It is the operational assignment surface for hosts that have already enrolled via Insights or Worker tokens.
Each host needs a role (forwarder, cluster peer, search head member, deployment server, and others), an availability group (ag1, ag2, ag3), and optionally a cluster number for clustered roles. These assignments drive compliance baseline selection, plan targeting, and fleet topology views.
This page complements Enterprise Inventory, which defines template-based topology for multi-tenant enterprise environments. Use Inventory Groups for day-to-day host assignment after enrollment.
Unassigned and Assigned Tabs
The page has two tabs:
| Tab | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Unassigned | Hosts enrolled but not yet mapped to a role |
| Assigned | Hosts with an active inventory assignment |
Filter either tab by hostname using the search box at the top.
Role Suggestions
For unassigned hosts, Deslicer analyzes collected Splunk configuration and proposes a role assignment. Suggestions appear as a badge with a sparkle icon, showing role, availability group, and cluster number when applicable. Hover the badge to see why the suggestion was made.
When multiple hosts share the same suggestion pattern, select them and click Apply suggestions to assign in bulk.
If no suggestion is available, assign the role manually using the inline controls on each row.
Assigning a Host
For each unassigned host you set:
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Role | Splunk inventory role (forwarder, indexer, search head, and others) |
| AG | Availability group — partitions HA peers so maintenance does not restart all members at once |
| Cluster | Cluster number — shown only for cluster manager and cluster peer roles |
Click Assign on a single row, or select multiple hosts and use Assign selected for batch assignment. Use Clear on an assigned host to remove its assignment and return it to the unassigned pool.
After Pending Approval
When you approve hosts on Pending Approvals, a banner reminds you to assign them here. Hosts without inventory roles may show incomplete compliance results or be excluded from role-specific plan targeting.
